Labelling

The visible mark in the picture and the signed record in the file — two layers, one step.

Labelling means two things at once in verstag. The explainer on „Prüfen“ (Verify) sets the two layers side by side:

Drei getrennte Dinge: Die Prüfung liest, was schon da ist. Das AI-Label ist die sichtbare Kennzeichnung, die für Menschen erkennbar ins Bild gebrannt wird. Die Content Credentials sind der signierte Herkunftsdatensatz, den verstag beim Rendern in die Ausgabedatei einbettet. Ein Label allein ist nach dem Weiterverarbeiten oft weg; ein Datensatz allein sieht niemand.

Three separate things: verification reads what is already there. The visible AI label is the marking burnt into the picture for people to see. The Content Credentials are the signed provenance record verstag embeds into the output file while rendering. A label on its own is often gone after further processing; a record on its own is seen by nobody.

The signed-in product speaks German, so its labels and messages are quoted in German throughout, with the English rendering in italics.

The two layers

The visible label sits in the pixels. Stripping a file's metadata — which many platforms do on upload — does not take it along.

The record sits in the file, not in the picture. It is read out, and a later change to the file can be detected from it. A crop or a re-encode, on the other hand, can cut a burnt-in mark off or render it illegible.

Both are produced in one step: when you produce an output, the label is composited into the pixels and the result is signed. For video the label is burnt into the frames. The record keeps the visible mark as an action of its own — without a label that entry is not in it.

What you decide and what is fixed

Content Credentials cannot be switched off. There is no control for it. The batch says so as a line of its own: „Immer signiert – Content Credentials in jeder Datei.“ (Always signed – Content Credentials in every file.)

The visible label is a per-output decision for images. Without a default of your own, the editor opens with the label on. For video it cannot be switched off — a video derivative always carries one.

What verification read about the file's provenance does not decide whether a label is applied. It drives the marking obligation and the wording of notices; the visible mark is yours to set.

What stays untouched

Neither the label nor the signature touches the file you uploaded. The „Quelldatei“ (source file) row in the downloads drawer carries the tag „ohne Label“ (no label), and beside it, depending on the file, „enthält Manifest“ (contains a manifest) or „ohne Signatur“ (unsigned).

Prerequisites

PNG, JPEG, MP4 and MOV get labelled and signed. More formats can be checked than can be labelled — an asset in another format gets a view page instead of the editor, with the sentence „Dieses Format kann geprüft, aber nicht bearbeitet werden.“ (This format can be verified but not edited.)

And verification has to be through. Until it is, the editor stays locked and says so in the amber bar: „Dieses Asset ist noch nicht verifiziert. Starte die Prüfung, bevor du Derivate definierst.“ (This asset is not verified yet. Start the check before defining derivatives.)

Where this happens in the product

There is no „Kennzeichnen“ menu entry. Labelling happens in two places: in an asset's editor, whose second editing step is „AI-Label“, and in the batch wizard, whose third step is „Zuschnitt & Label“ (Crop & label).

The stage „Kennzeichnung“ (Labelling) in the editor's progress rail counts as done as soon as an output exists — including one that carries no visible label.
